Document their work using appropriate conventions (MLA). Control sentence-level error (grammar, punctuation, and spelling).
Learning Outcomes 5 and 6: MLA/Surface Level
Learning Outcome 5 states that students should document their work using appropriate conventions, while Learning Outcome 6 states that students should control sentence-level error. MLA format is the format that I was taught to use all through middle school and high school so I figured I would do alright in English 110 because that is the format we would be continuing to use. However, what I wasn’t taught in previous years was the way to correctly cite sources using MLA format, which was a problem because I didn’t want to be accused of plagiarism. One of the things that English 110 has taught me is that there is a different way to cite sources according to what type of writing it is. For example, the correct citation for an article is much different than the correct citation for a textbook. I learned all of the correct ways from the book Little Seagull, which also helped me address a lot of the local revisions of my paper such as grammatical errors. In my Big Data Analytics essay, MLA proper citations were not a problem for me. An example of one of my citations from this paper is as follows:
Barton, Amy J. “Big Data.” Journal of Nursing Education, 55, 3, Nov. 3, 2016, 123-124. Doi: 10.3928/01484834-20160216-01
This is the citation for one of the articles that I used as evidence in my paper and I made sure that it had all of the correct and required information in it. Without the knowledge that I gained from this course, it is very likely that I would’ve been accused of plagiarism due to the fact of not knowing proper MLA citation format.
