“Anyone in limelight must regularly navigate disconnected social contexts simultaneously, balancing what they say with how their diverse audiences might interpret their actions.” (31)
“When teens face a collapsing context in physical environments, their natural response is to become quiet… sudden appearance of someone with social authority changes the context entirely.” (33)
“I was going online to escape the so-called real world. I felt ostracized and misunderstood at school, but online I could portray myself as the person I wanted to be.” (37)
“Teens have grown sophisticated with how they manage contexts and present themselves in order to be read by their intended audience. They don’t always succeed, but their efforts ar phenomenal.” (43)
I really enjoyed this text and what it had to say about teens and their identities on social media. Personally, I could relate to a lot of the context, therefore I agree with what Boyd has to say about this topic. I really liked how she defended teens, as most individuals would accuse teens of using social media as a way to have a different identity than what they have in person, Boyd believes that they are using different social media platforms as a way to escape many of the expectations that they have from their parents, family members, and other adults. In all honesty, I don’t believe I disagreed with anything that Boyd had to say.
